31 Days: A Project Flashback

Last fall, I saw The Nester's Tutorial on making a coffee filter wreath and thought to myself that's something I could do. It doesn't require measuring or precise gluing because precision is not my forte! I actually think I know more ways to cover imprecision than to actually make it happen. I'm not kidding about that. When I post my pictures of my dry erase frame I made, I'll tell you the real purpose of the piece of ribbon between the 2 different patterns! I just like to get to work and get the project done. I need fast gratification or I lose interest. I actually have another project waiting for me to complete that I'm procrastinating because I need to get mentally ready for because it's going to require more precision and patience than I normally give to my crafting projects!

When we moved into this house with relatively high ceilings for a single story home, I had just the place to put a coffee filter wreath - above my TV.  It would look great on my limestone fireplace, too, but until I figure out a way to hang things on limestone without making huge holes in the stone, I'm content to just set large things on the mantle.

I think Cpt must've been at NTC or something because I was here by myself and knew I could hang out with my late night trash TV while I worked on this wreath. Let me tell you, if I ever do this again I'm going to have to band aid all my fingers before I get started! Even with a low temp glue gun, I still burned my fingertips. It might even be hard to recognize my fingerprints, that's how bad it was. I persevered, though, and got it made.

It really was a no brainer kind of project. I think I used about 2 1/2 packs of unbleached coffee filters, but mine turned out really full. It could be done with less. My fingertips sure wish I had used less.

After it was completed, I loved how it looked. It was just too small to hang by itself above the TV. At first I thought about getting old shutters and hanging them on the wall behind the wreath. No go there. I couldn't find shutters and my want it done now personality was finished searching. Then I decided I would hang a big frame around it. I even bought a frame, but it wasn't big enough. Buying  a frame big enough, apart from going to Goodwill every day hoping one would show up for weeks on end, was going to get expensive. My next thought was to cover a canvas with fabric, but while I was at Hobby Lobby to buy the canvas I decided that foam board would do just as well and was cheaper than buying a huge canvas. Sad, but true, this is the kind of logic I use with lots of decorating at my house. My last resort is whatever costs less and I can do the quickest!

With foam board, fabric, and glue gun in hand, I went to work covering the 3 pieces of foam board that  I needed. My poor burned up little fingertips! They were glad to see this whole ordeal come to an end!

I really do love the end product. The sconces I used were old ones that I had hung in my living room at a previous address. They weren't my first pick. I really wanted  lantern sconces that were on clearance at Hobby Lobby at the time, but once again my cheapness won out and I used something I already had that cost me nothing!

This is a shot I took of as much of the living room as I could, just to give an idea of how this looks on the wall in relation to the rest of the room. I told someone the other day that my house really looks like I've got it staged to sell because I have so few personal photos on the walls. I must remedy that, but not soon!
